(Sara)

I’m at my usual table eating my usual Nutella-filled chocolate croissant and sipping English breakfast tea with milk and two sugars. I look down at my favorite navy Prada suit paired with my nude colored Jimmy Choos. I smooth over my hair that, thanks to my useless alarm clock, I didn’t have time to deal with this morning; therefore, it’s pulled back. But I made it, I’m here and I wait. I wait almost every single day. I’ve only missed seeing them while I moved to London for a few years, but other than that—rain, snow, or shine—I’m always here.

The staff at Joanna’s restaurant are incredible; I have been coming here almost every day for seven years and they just leave me to my business. They don’t ask me what I want, they already know, they just nod their hello and bring me my usual. I sit in my customary tiny table by the window as I wait to see him leave his house. I have the perfect view of his brownstone from this angle. He sometimes looks up toward the corner restaurant before getting into his car, almost as if he senses me watching him.

I look down at my watch; it’s almost half past seven and he still hasn’t left his house. I finish my flaky brioche and wonder for the millionth time how they fucking get all that velvety smooth chocolate inside without marring the pastry, must be a syringe, I conclude as I devour the last bite and look out the window just in time to see his black car pull up. A minute later, he finally emerges, clean-shaven and hair still slightly damp. I inhale as if I’m standing right next to him. The three of them get into the back of his chauffeured SUV and drive off.

Time’s up! I think sadly to myself and whisper “See you tomorrow, JJ,” to no one in particular.

I really enjoyed this book!! It’s mostly told from Sara’s perspective who is Emily Bruel’s best friend from the first book in the Audio Fools series (Love in Rewind). You get to read about what Sara was going through while her best friend was falling in love. I think it’s easy to make assumptions about Sara’s character when your reading Love in Rewind. But what I loved the most about Lies in Rewind was that all of your expectations and assumptions are completely shattered.

The story starts right off with Sara having a really bad couple of days. But ironically it’s during this struggle that she realizes that the choices she has made in her life have not turned out the way she thought they would. I think it’s a pivotal point in Sara’s life where she is forced to reflect upon the decisions and lies of her past in order to find happiness in her future. Because ultimately the lies that she has told herself and the people around her were hurting her the most in the end.

I think that’s something many of us can relate to. Doing and saying things because that’s what other people expect from us. Sara is by far one of my favorite characters ever. She’s not perfect, she makes mistakes, she’s strong yet vulnerable. But perhaps the most admirable quality in Sara is her fierce protectiveness of the people she loves. Sara just keeps it real and I really admire that. There is one quote in particular that I think sums up Sara’s journey in this book. “I choose me. I choose to love me and make sure that I will be good to me.” I love this quote because I feel like this is the moment that Sara realizes that it’s okay to love and respect herself despite the mistakes she might have made in the past. It’s what you do with the consequences of those mistakes that defines you.

I loved that the 80’s songs are taken to a whole other level in this book. They blend perfectly with the story making it an unforgettable read. If you’re like me and don’t know half the songs referenced in the book, don’t worry! You will be able to click on them in the kindle version so you can listen to them (Pretty cool right!!!). I loved that this series uses songs instead of words sometimes to express feelings. I think we truly see the power of communicating with music in the audio fools books. If you really think about it music is just another way to express yourself and your feelings.

  1. Great review!! You really have me interested in this. I need to get the first one before reading this one I assume? Sounds like a great idea about the music. It can be so expressive, just like words 🙂 Pretty cool you can click on them and listen to them!!
